Hulopoe Beach

Where is it Hulopoe Beach?

When it comes to beautiful beaches, Hulopoe Beach is one of the finest and most scenic in the world. Secluded and surrounded by sparkling blue water, Hulopoe is a pristine crescent-shaped stretch of white sand located in the Hulopoe Bay on the southern coast of Lanai. Bathed in natural splendor, it is Lanai’s premier beach.

Why Visit Hulopoe Beach?

Fronting the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, this great beach is suitable for swimming year round with water temperatures around 70 degrees, although the water is typically calmer in the summer months. It boasts a relaxing beach park with plenty of shade trees as well as a grassy lawn, grills, picnic tables, and sparkling clean restrooms which make it the perfect place for having a delicious lunch on the beach or watching the sun go down.

Things to Do

Lanai is renowned as one of the world’s prime snorkeling destinations. Located within Lanai’s Marine Life Conservation District, Hulopoe Beach is a protected area with an abundance of interesting marine animals including sea turtles and many species of fish. You can also explore amazing coral reef formations.

To the east of Hulopoe Beach, you will discover a delightful lava terrace containing large tide pools, and there are plenty of rocks to climb. Well-protected and fun to explore, these volcanic pools allow you to view a variety of sea creatures. When the tide goes out, you may spot sea stars, hermit crabs, tropical fish and more.

For a fun and romantic venture, you can visit Sweetheart Rock, known as Puu Pehe in Hawaiian. According to the legend, a warrior climbed and jumped from the 80-foot summit to overcome grief after his beloved’s death (his beloved who died due to the surge of storm waves beneath the summit). This iconic landmark is located southeast of Hulopoe Beach. To get there take a short hike southeast past Hulopoe Beach and the tide pools. After a 15-20 minute hike up the path along the rocky cliffs, prepare to look down at this breathtaking landmark. Dramatic views of the bay also await, and sunsets here are especially romantic. Be on the lookout for spinner dolphins while you wait for the sun to go down.

There are plenty of exciting off-road and ATV trails on Lanai. Jeep rentals are available at Lanai Jeep Rentals in the city. For a unique experience, travel off-road to Shipwreck Beach on the northern coast of Lanai where you can spot several grounded vessels offshore from different eras. Photographing the massive wrecks and beachcombing to find the 19th- and 20th-century ship timbers that are deteriorating along the beach make this a fun excursion. There are ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks just off the beach, and six miles of shoreline to explore.

Another fun thing to do is taking a ferry ride over to Maui for a great day trip. It’s an easy walk from Hulopoe Beach to the ferry port in Manele Bay. Once you embark, you may even spot a humpback whale on the way over to Maui as groups of whales are found in the waters just offshore. There is plenty of shopping and sightseeing to do as well as tempting cuisine to enjoy once you arrive.

Parking

There is a nice parking area on the beach. There is no fee for parking.

Where to Stay

There are plenty of places to stay on Lanai, including the Four Seasons Resort Lanai located right on the beach. If you are looking for lower cost options, Hotel Lanai is only about six miles away. Best Western Pioneer Inn is 16 miles away in Maui. If you like camping, there is a campground located at the park with restrooms and showers.

Directions

If you are traveling by air into Maui, you can reach Lanai’s Manele Harbor from Maui’s Lahaina Harbor through the Expeditions Ferry service. The trip by ferry takes approximately one hour. If you are driving on Lanai, take Highway 440 south from Lanai City approximately 13 miles, and follow the signs to the beach parking area.

Conclusion

Hulopoe Beach is one of the most beautiful areas of Lanai and the island’s best beach for swimming. A trip to Hawaii will not be complete without visiting this scenic and serene destination.
