Where Is Ho’okipa Beach?

Ho’okipa beach park is located on the North Shore of Maui, Hawaii. It’s a 12-minute drive from Paia on the Hana highway. The entrance to the park is on the east end of the beach. This beach is a spacious state park so the hours of operation are 5:30 am to 7:00 pm. The best time to go is in the morning before the crowd sets in.

Why Is It Worth Visiting Ho’okipa Beach?

Ho’okipa beach is a world renowned windsurfing destination. The Aloha Classic is an annual windsurfing competition that is held here. Another competition that is held here is the Red Bull King of the Air, which is a kitesurfing competition.

While visiting Ho’okipa beach, one of the activities to be doing is watching the surfers since this beach is a surfers heaven. Windsurfing is the main thing that brings people here. The huge waves have been reported to reach up to 30 feet.

There are also strong winds on this beach. During the winter the waves are the largest. And then in the summer, the waves are a lot smaller.

There are two lifeguard stands on the beach. It is recommended not to swim, but there are some tidepools to cool off in. Only experienced surfers are advised to try out these waves since the surf is so strong. So if you are an experienced surfer then by all means surf ho okipa.

Activities To Do In Ho’okipa Beach

As well as surfing, Ho’okipa also has many amenities to offer. There are bathrooms, picnic tables and an observation deck. This is a great beach for sunbathing and beach walking. Just be careful walking down the path to the beach since it’s very slippery when wet.

Another great activity to do here is watching the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. They are known to come on the beach around sunset to rest. It would be a great experience to watch the sunset on this beach and to get a sighting of one of these turtles. Just keep in mind to keep 15 feet distance from the turtles. It is illegal to feed or touch them. And do not use flash photography when taking a picture of one of these turtles.

After a long day at the beach, you should have a nice dinner at Mama’s Fish House. This restaurant is well-known for offering the freshest and tastiest seafood in Hawaii. It’s four minutes down the road from the Ho’okipa beach. Make sure to make reservations though, since this restaurant is extremely popular.

How To Get To Ho’okipa Beach

The closest airport to Ho’okipa beach is Kahului Airport. It takes 26 minutes to drive to Ho’okipa beach from this airport. You just take highway 36 to get to the beach.

Hotels

One of the places to stay at is the Inn at Mama’s. There are four cottages to rent, two suites and a studio. This is a five star hotel.

If you are looking for more budget-friendly hotel options then there is Ku’au Inn Bed & Breakfast. The prices per night start at $145. They offer relaxing rooms, free breakfast, a patio as well as a lounge. It is only six minutes away from Ho’okipa beach.

Another hotel to possibly stay in is the Maui Beach Hotel. This hotel has a rooftop pool and a shuttle bus. It offers beautiful views of the ocean and harbor. It is 23 minutes away from Ho’okipa beach.

Parking At Ho’okipa Beach

The great thing about parking at Ho’okipa beach is that not only do they have a parking lot, they actually have three. One of the parking areas is located at the Ho’okipa overlook. This one has plenty of parking spaces. It is also the one closest to the entrance. The other two are facing the beach. There is not a fee to park your vehicle.
